I am writing this to warn people who think, like I did, that Charite(Mitte) is the best place ever to give birth to a child. I do not question the fact that many great doctors work there and they save lives every day. Just consider what could happen to you and decide if Charite is worth it.
On the 12.07.21 my wife started feeling that it was time to go to the hospital. We waited at home as long as we could before departure. We were confident that we will be accepted in Charite as we did registration appointment in the hospital few weeks earlier. By the time we reached the hospital my wife was in pain and could hardly walk without help. I was not allowed to accompany her to her room and she had to go alone. After some time I got a call from my wife’s nurse saying that the department is full and we do not qualify as an emergency case that is why we need to leave the Charite and find ourselves another hospital. I was allowed to go to my wife’s room to pick her up. Imagine yourself a picture that you come in to some small room where your wife is crying in pain and the nurse keeps repeating that you need to leave. We were not asked to come back later but just leave to another place.
I skip the part of me arguing with them and come to the point. I managed to find another hospital that would take us right away. I asked if my wife could be transported to another hospital. First the stuff said yes but you need to wait 2-3 hours for the transport. Then they just said no. The stuff was pleased to find out that we came with private car and suggested that I take my wife to another hospital in the car. My wife got some painkillers and we were sent away after 3 waisted hours. I had to do another 30min drive with my wife screaming and crying next to me. In the new hospital were place into the birth room immediately.
Even though the stuff in Charite was polite, i think that doing such a thing is inhumane and deeply disrespectful. We waited for this moment as for a biggest holiday of our life and in the end that is how we were treated. We did everything right: we had insurance, we registered in the hospital, we waited at home long enough before coming to the hospital.
Nurse in Charite wished us “all best in another hospital” when we were leaving.
If you plan to give birth in Charite, better think twice.
